Differences Between OPTL and ATL MOT Test Lanes

When planning a new MOT bay or upgrading existing garage equipment, one of the key decisions for many garages is whether to choose an OPTL (One Person Test Lane) or an ATL (Automated Test Lane).

Both systems allow a single MOT tester to carry out a test without requiring a second person and both meet DVSA requirements for one-person testing. However, the way they operate, the level of automation they provide and the installation requirements can differ significantly.

At ATECH, we help garages choose the right MOT equipment solution based on their space, budget and long-term business plans. Understanding the difference between OPTL and ATL systems is an important part of making the right investment.

What Is An OPTL (One Person Test Lane)?

A One Person Test Lane (OPTL) is designed to allow an MOT tester to complete the full test process independently. An OPTL setup provides the essential equipment needed for compliant MOT testing, while keeping the installation simpler and more cost-effective.

What Is An ATL (Automated Test Lane)?

An Automated Test Lane (ATL) provides a higher level of automation during the MOT testing process. The biggest difference is the inclusion of an automated brake tester sequence and axle weighing functionality. This allows the system to guide the tester through each stage of the brake test, helping create a smoother and more streamlined process.

What Does Axle Weighing Do?

One of the main differences between ATL and OPTL systems is axle weighing.

An ATL brake tester includes built-in load cells that automatically measure the vehicle’s weight during the brake test. This information is recorded as part of the testing process and removes the need for separate weighing procedures.

An OPTL brake tester does not include axle weighing, making it a more flexible option for many garages.

Does a New MOT Bay Have to Be ATL?

No. A new MOT bay does not have to be an ATL system. An OPTL bay can still fully comply with DVSA requirements for one-person MOT testing.
